Wall to Wall Street Art Safari

How to spend a beautiful late summer day in Decatur. Hop into your convertible, and cruise around our little burg checking out the amazing, intriguing, and provocative murals created as part of the Living Walls Conference.

Doodles, Gaia, and Nanook

What is the Living Walls Conference? According to their website, “The idea behind Living Walls is to put the work of a very small subset of the population (street artists, graffiti writers, etc), people who actually interact with space, and people who spend their time in discourse about public space all under the same roof. Our intentions are simply to broadcast … a wide spectrum of ideas about public space, hoping that everyone leaves the event looking at the city, its walls, and how we interact with space differently.”

Greg Mike

In addition to the actual conference, artists from around the world created twenty-four new works, with fully eight of them right here in Decatur. Such bounty!

I read this quotation from one of the artists, in a radio piece that ran on WABE.

“Michi (Meko) says that there’s an allure to painting on a wall regardless of whether it belongs to you or not. ‘Where this was a dead space, now it’ll be alive, no matter what’s there, and once you put something in a space, you can never take it away because then that space will die again.’”

But can they be taken away? These murals are mostly to be found on private property. While permission was asked for and granted, property can change hands, and not everyone will make the same esthetic choice.

I urge you to drive, bike, or walk; experience them all on some beautiful autumn afternoon soon.

For convenience, here’s a little map I made and a list of the mural locations around Decatur. (And one more picture) You can find information about the entire project, and the complete list of artists, on the Living Walls Conference website, referenced above.

Thank you for stopping by, Cheryl. In fact I was thinking about you while I typed up this post. Want to do an on-foot version one day soon? You could put it on your BAD blog. And we could have a nice lunch!

  2. Very cool! I especially like the little furry thing riding the unicorn-bear whatsit. 🙂

Me, too, Annette! And there are several others that deserve attention but my photos didn’t turn out as well as I hoped. Thank you for the comment.

Mary, I love the post. I really enjoyed the Greg Mike and Kofke murals. Did you see the pictures Marisa G. took of 5 Points in NY with Giuliano? I have been fascinated with this topic since seeing the Banksy film. I hope the 4!!! of us get to see you soon.

Hi Govin, thanks for commenting. I watched Exit Through the Gift Shop on your recommendation and enjoyed it as well. I’d love to see M&G’s photos. (So much good news coming out of the Govin clan lately!)

  4. Great post, Mary! Cath and I have stopped by a few, and now we have no excuse not to stop by the rest (except for a move to Scotland, that is ;)). Thanks for including the map/list too!

Hi Lar, thank you for commenting. If you have the time before your departure I recommend seeing them. But there’s a lot of great stuff in Edinburgh, too.

A very moving post and beautifully written.

Philadelphia has had a similar project since the 1980’s and it has been very well received and has given the city some incredible murals. Hopefully our version will be as successful.

  6. maryflad says:

Thanks, Maura. I googled the murals of Philadelphia and came upon this amazing slideshow.

I had no idea. Beautiful work.

    Mary,
We have a living walls mural at the Oakhurst Community Garden Project as well. Shaun Thurston is the artist and was completed August 2010.

    • maryflad says:

Thanks for letting me know, Stephanie. It’s been too long since I’ve visited the Oakhurst Garden. I’ll come by and check it out.

  8. Weird says:

Why are names showing in this post instead of our handles? I am looking on mobile version on iPhone.

  9. Weird says:

Never mind. I thought I was still on DM. Thanks for the post — look forward to seeing them all soon.
