Jazzing Around

In the dim lights and cozy atmosphere of Feast Restaurant, with the warming brick oven glowing in the back corner, what could be more romantic than hearing the Kayla Taylor jazz band sing your favorite jazz standards while you enjoy a great dinner with someone you love. Romance was definitely in the air on Saturday night (February 11, 2012) as Kayla belted out At Last, causing us to we leave our fabulous seared duck with roasted plum sauce to get cold while we joined the other couples on the dance floor. (If you’ve been to Feast you may be wondering – dance floor? Well moving a few tables aside accommodated the couples wanting to yield to their romantic inclinations.) Kayla’s soulful voice filled the restaurant for hours as she sang tunes from the 30s, 40s, and 50s and was backed up by three great musicians (Mike Zimmerman from the Mike Zimmerman Trio among them) on sax, keyboard, and guitar.

If you missed this opportunity to enjoy this jazz ensemble, don’t despair. There are several opportunities that I know of to enjoy jazz in Decatur.

  • Kayla Taylor Jazz performs often at Feast Restaurant as well as at Harbor Bar & Fish House. Check her website to find out dates and places (www.kaylataylorjazz.com).
  • You can hear the Mike Zimmerman Trio play jazz standards every Thursday night beginning at 7:30 pm at Feast Restaurant. The trio also performs at Harbor Bar & Fish House for scheduled Sunday brunches (check the calendar at http://www.harbourdecatur.com to find out dates).
  • In the bar area of Parkers on Ponce, a jazz duo featuring Evan Hodges plays every Tuesday and Thursday. On occasional Wednesday nights in the bar, you can be treated the big band sound of the Johnny Martini group.

Jazz up your eating experience at these great Decatur restaurants, and show the restaurant owners we appreciate having dinner music in Decatur.
